To use a fresh vanilla bean, start by slicing it lengthwise with a sharp knife. Then, using the dull side of the blade, carefully scrape out the tiny, aromatic seeds and add them directly to your batter, dough, or mixture.
Don't toss that empty vanilla bean pod! After scraping out the seeds for your recipe, repurpose the pod by placing it in your sugar jar. Over time, it will infuse the sugar with its rich, aromatic vanilla essence - perfect for baking, coffee, or sprinkling over desserts.
One inch of vanilla bean is equal to 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract.
